Seed libraries are dynamic, living resources that can function autonomously if they are tended to by their communities. In order to build capacity for stewardship, Altadena Seed Library provides various educational resources, including videos, zines, and workshops. Engage your community, learn about California’s vibrant ecosystem, and practice tending to native plants through the following workshops.

Seed walks

Connect to local ecology through guided walks in which participants will learn about permits and collection ethics, native plant identification, and collection practices. Optional collaborations with other local experts, including herbalists, biologists, entomologists, and artists.

Seed processing

Experience the meditative effects of seed processing. Process, sort, and store native plant seeds in community with one another while learning about conservation and seed banking. These workshops focus on identifying and removing seeds from their parent plants, techniques for cleaning and sorting seeds, methods for seed dehydration and long-term storage for conservation.

Seed sowing

Get your hands dirty with this workshop on seed sowing. Learn about the unique pretreatment requirements of various native seeds through this dynamic workshop. Participants will learn about light requirements, depth of planting, soil types, container specifications, heat needs, moisture conditions, stratification, and scarification. Demonstrations may include leeching, hot water scarification, sand paper, smoke scarification, and more.
